You can keep 2 or more together for a couple months in a 10-20 gal tank. You won't have problems housing hatchings. I use a 10.0 Reptisun for UVB & a daylight blue bulb. This system works great, as long as they get food & sprayed water every day they'll grow like weeds, feed them all they want. Make sure one doesn’t hog all the food. Keeping them in close quarters for the first month, it helps you monitor their progress. I use only a few fake plants as hatchlings, they don't start eating fruits & veggies until they are sub adults. The fruits I use to feed mine are oranges, strawberries, berries, seedless red & green grapes. LIGHTING (MANDATORY) Improper Lighting =Sick Chameleons. Use a Zoo Med. 5.0 or 10.0 UVB fluorescent & clamp fixture and basking light or daylight blue bulb. Both are needed for heat and UVB. Use a timer if possible. Summer hours: 8AM-8PM Winter hours after daylight saving time: 8AM-7PM. They'll sleep when it gets dark outside. So you’re wasting your bulbs if you leave them on. Also keep them on a tight schedule. They have to sleep like a Bird, or they won't function properly. TEMPERATURES Daytime temperature should be around 75 – 78 degrees F with nighttime drop of at least ten to fifteen degrees F. The Veiled Chameleon should be given a basking spot of 90 – 100 degrees F and this can be achieved with a clamp lamp and the correct wattage of bulb on one end of the enclosure. Take care to place the basking light where the Chameleon cannot come into contact with it and be burned. The other side of the enclosure should remain room temperature. Take care not to overheat the enclosure. A cool area is just as important as the basking area! HOUSING You can use a10 gal tank until 5 months old then a small repterium. You need a few climbing branches, some plastic or silk “pothos” plants. You Can Get Cheap Ones At Dollar Store, Craft Store. **NO SUBSTRATE ON THE BOTTOM, NO HEAT ROCK. NO NIGHT LIGHTS, NO WATER BOWL, KEEP ARID AND DRY. NO HUMIDITY. SPRAY BOTTLE Chameleons don’t drink from a bowl, you only need to spray them GENTLY once a day, They have to be kept dry 22-23 hrs. a day. Substrates on the bottom will cause harmful bacteria & molds that will kill your chameleons instantly. For a veiled, a drip system is a waste of money and could be harmful if water sets around too long. VITAMINS I highly recommend HERPCARE CRICKET DUST. It's safe indoors and outdoors. MINER-AL is also good. Use the OUTDOORS brand. NEVER USE THE INDOOR BRAND. (If you do and then take your Chameleon outside the D3 will kill your Chameleon instantly). Also gut load your crickets with kale, collard, mustard greens, or just buy GUT LOAD from the pet store. TIPS Aquarium Users: I cover the sides of my tank with bright colored construction paper. Back-royal blue (simulate sky), bottom- lime green (grass), sides-bright yellow. This will enhances the colors when he's an adult. The colors he learns, as a baby will make him brighter or as an adult. This depends all on his environment, but the best reason to do this is to stop them from pawing at the glass. They don't understand glass and waste to much energy trying to attack the reflection they see. **GLASS ENCLOSURES MUST BE ELIMINATED AT 5 MONTHS OLD AND SWITCHED TO A SCREEN ENCLOSURE. When sexually mature their reflections cause great stress. And stress is a big killer of Chameleons. CRICKETS Feed your Chameleons the right size crickets. The larger they grow so should the size of the crickets. Cannot express enough, your biggest need is lighting. You have to have 5.0 or higher UVB. The Zoo Med Reptisun is a good one. The 10.0 are good for up to a year now, where the 5.0 are only good up to 6 months on the UVB output. The lighting is the most important thing for health. Good UVB will eliminate 90% of their health problems. Thanks and good luck with your chameleon. Please keep in mind that these are only guidelines for the care of your Chameleons. You may or may not find something that works better for you. As there are many different care sheets out there, please feel free to use the one that best fits your needs.. |
